A healthier environment starts with small, eco-friendly choices and daily habits. While you’re keeping your teeth and mouth healthy, there are also a few steps you can take to help keep our world healthy as well! Read below for some tips on how to go green with your oral health routine!

Making Eco-Friendly Dental Health Choices

Below are a few ways to go green with your oral health routine:

  • Discarding your old toothbrushes – Traditional toothbrushes are made with hard plastic handles and nylon bristles. This means they can take hundreds of years to decompose! Instead of throwing away old toothbrushes, find new uses for them. Toothbrushes are great for scrubbing hard-to-reach places and can also be used as great paintbrushes for kids’ crafts.
  • Choosing eco-friendly floss – Most floss is made out of nylon materials that will not biodegrade and is much too small to be processed by most recycling plants. Floss containers and picks are also unable to be recycled. Next time you’re searching for floss, make sure to choose more eco-friendly brands or floss that’s made from silk.
  • Choosing eco-friendly toothbrushes – There are many eco-friendly replacements for traditional toothbrushes including bamboo toothbrushes and toothbrushes made from recycled materials. Another thing to keep in mind is that electric toothbrushes only require that you throw away the head of a toothbrush instead of the whole thing!
  • Saving water – Lastly, turning off your water while you brush your teeth can save up to 200 gallons of water a month! Saving water can be applied to other parts of your day as well, such as turning off the water while you wash your hands, only running your dishwasher when it’s full, and taking showers instead of baths.

Here at Duhon Family Dentistry, it’s important to us that we help save teeth and save our environment at the same time. To make an appointment for a dental cleaning and a checkup for the whole family, please contact our Lake Charles, LA general dental office today!
